Matthew Chan
One of the original founding members of Metro Blades, Matthew rejoined the club in 2005 to provide coaching. As our head coach, he is an extremely experienced former competitive fencer, he participated in the 1972 & 1976 Olympics and the 1974 & 1978 Asian Games for both individual and team events. His highest result was 4th place Bronze Men’s Foil Individual. He also was a referee at the 1984 Olympics. He imparts a great deal of guidance for our competitive fencers, and he provides individual lessons for all levels in both foil and epee.

Raymond Chan
A senior coach at Metro Blades, Raymond trained in Hong Kong and has been fencing for over 25 years. He has been coaching at Metro Blades for more than 15 years and is skilled in coaching both foil and epee in the classical style of the French school. He trains many of our competitive members and is extremely detailed in his technical focus.

Bryan Hartwell
Bryan has been teaching foil for over six years, and also has experience providing sabre and epee lessons. Holding complete Level 1 NCCP certification, his style focuses on observation, adaptability and tactics. Bryan formerly trained varsity athletes and teams at the Fencing Club at Ryerson University while studying under Russian fencing master Iosef Mirkin until the club closed in 2006. Here at Metro Blades he has currently been assigned certification via the latest OFA Aide-Moniteur coaching training.

Joseph Cheng
An experienced and currently competitive fencer, Joseph has been fencing for over 15 years and has taught numerous beginner and intermediate classes at the club in the past, although nowadays he is often on hiatus due to a travelling business schedule for large parts of each year.

Trainers and Assistants

Other club members also help with teaching and training duties, including assisting with beginner’s classes, footwork sessions and working with newer members in partner drills. Currently Felice Yim, Lucie Hamelin, and Robert Indrigo all provide immeasurable assistance along with our coaches in helping to develop our members’ skills and good habits.
